The Sojourner Truth Walk: Celebrating Girls' and Women's Leadership

The Sojourner Truth Walk is the annual fundraiser for our mission partner Camp Sojourner Girls’ Leadership Camp. First Church again has a team this year, and we hope many can participate!

This event is named in honor of Sojourner Truth, an African-American woman who escaped slavery and then fought to end it, while also speaking out for women's rights and economic justice. She, along with many others, has served as an inspiration and role model for generations to come.

Funds raised through the Sojourner Truth Walk will be used to provide scholarships for girls to go to camp, and to help fund year-round leadership activities which are free for girls and families.

You can participate in the walk virtually or in person (masked), at the Meadow at Bartram’s Garden, where there will be many fun activities and all ages are welcome. Please see event details page for more info.

Diaper & Wipes Drive

Diaper & Wipes Drive for Maternity Care Coalition

First Church will be collecting diapers and wipes to donate to MCC from February 2 through February 23 to support the Maternity Care Coalition. All sizes of diapers are needed, though smaller sizes (N, 1, and 2 in many brands) are especially appreciated. Diapers can also be out of their original packaging, so if your child has outgrown a partial box of diapers please feel free to bring it in. Donations can be left in marked bins in Old Buttonwood Hall.

Maternity Care Coalition (MCC) is a Philadelphia-based non-profit that was founded forty years ago to combat infant mortality, which is much higher in Philadelphia than the national average, and much more likely to impact minority communities. MCC’s mission is to improve the health and well-being of pregnant women and parenting families, and to enhance school readiness for children under 3 years of age. MCC conducts 11 different programs and has helped over 135,000 women, babies, and families since its founding.

The Giving Tree

The Twenties & Thirties (T&T) Group is sponsoring a “Giving Tree” again this year supporting multiple programs of the Valley Youth House (VYH), including housing assistance programs for teens and young adults experiencing homelessness, foster care, or coming out of care.  We invite everyone to select an ornament from the tree in Old Buttonwood Hall.  Each ornament has a card attached, describing the item to be given, so that you can select which gift(s) you would like to give.  Please bring all gifts (new, unwrapped, with the original card attached) to the church on or before Sunday, December 15th.  If you would like to participate but cannot shop for an item, monetary donations will be accepted.  Please contact Annie LeCluyse.

Camp Sojourner Workday at Bartram's Garden

On November 9, you can be part of Camp Sojourner’s workday at Bartram’s Garden, tending to their vegetable plot (putting it to bed for the winter) and helping with the community garden and organic farm. The day starts at 9:30 and includes lunch and a short program afterwards, ending at 1:30. This provides an opportunity to get to know both some of girls for whom we help to provide a summer camp experience (Camp Sojourner: Girls Leadership Camp) and one of Philadelphia’s hidden gems. Please contact Beverly Cowart for more information.

Join a Mission Trip to Mexico City!

Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church has invited congregants of First Church to a joint mission trip to the most vulnerable communities of Mexico City from October 12 - 19, 2019. We would be working with Urban Mosaic, an organization our church has supported for a number of years, and to which we have sent mission volunteers in the past few years. Working with the people in their communities is an amazing experience. On this trip we will be doing light construction work to build up their communities, and helping to organize health-care centers. We need to set a team by September 7.
