The First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia (FPCP) seeks Sunday School teachers to lead one of its two Children’s Sunday School classes, for ages 2–8 or ages 9 and up, with an anticipated 5 to 10 children in each class. Classes meet Sunday mornings from 9:50 to 10:30 a.m., September through May, following a specific schedule provided by the Associate Pastor. The teacher is paid for one hour of lesson preparation and one hour of classroom teaching each week, for two hours total, at a rate of $30 an hour.

Specific Expectations

  • Be reliable and dependable. Keep absences at a minimum. When absences are unavoidable, inform the church staff, giving as much advance notice as possible.

  • Be prompt to receive any special instructions and prepare the classroom before the lesson begins.

  • Limit external distractions such as non-essential cell-phone use during the class period.

  • Maintain regular communication with the Associate Pastor regarding the Sunday School schedule, curriculum, and classroom needs; notify the church administrator when supplies need to be purchased.

  • Complete incident reports relevant to any accidents or emergency situations that might occur.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Prepare and teach a weekly lesson appropriate to the assigned age group, using the curriculum and schedule provided by the Associate Pastor.

  • Greet children and, where appropriate, their parents or guardians as they arrive, and communicate effectively regarding classroom expectations.

  • Ensure that all children are accounted for and supervised for the full class period.

  • Engage children through discussion, activities, songs, or stories that support the lesson’s goals.

  • Encourage each child’s spiritual, social, and emotional development in a manner appropriate to their age.

  • Treat children with respect, flexibility, and patience.

  • Keep the classroom tidy and organized; return materials and supplies to their place before leaving.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience teaching or working with children in a church, school, or educational setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and lead a lesson patiently and cheerfully for the assigned age group.

  • Completion of Pennsylvania Mandated Reporter Training (must be completed prior to beginning work).

  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid.

  • High School diploma required. College, seminary, or theological education preferred.

  • Hiring is contingent upon a criminal background check including PA Child Line, PA criminal, and FBI clearances.
