The First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia (FPCP) seeks nursery caregivers.  FPCP maintains a drop-in nursery for small children, including infants and toddlers, while their parents or guardians attend worship services or other church events. This is primarily a Sunday morning activity, but with prior notice, caregivers may be asked to provide support at other times.  The pay is $25 an hour.

Specific Expectations

  • Be reliable and dependable. Keep absences at a minimum.  When absences are unavoidable, inform the church staff, giving as much advance notice as possible.

  • Be prompt to receive any special instructions and prepare the room for care.

  • Limit external distractions such as non-essential cell-phone use during the supervisory period.

  • Maintain regular communication regarding the status of the Nursery with church leadership; specifically, notify the church administrator when supplies, including cleaning supplies, need to be purchased or when the crib sheets need to be laundered or replaced.

  • Complete incident reports relevant to any accidents or emergency situations that might occur.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Greet parents as they arrive with their children and communicate effectively with parents regarding the guidelines of the Nursery and parental instructions for the care of children.

  • Ensure that all children are registered and keep track of their whereabouts at all times.

  • Supervise free play among children but also involve children, as much as possible, in active games, songs, and stories.

  • Interact with children to encourage skill development and meet the children’s emotional needs.

  • Treat children with respect, flexibility, and patience.

  • Introduce themselves to church volunteers and assist them in understanding the guidelines of the Nursery.

  • Keep the Nursery tidy and clean.  Make sure that toys and supplies are put away before leaving.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience working children, infants, and toddlers in a church, school, or childcare setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to work patiently and cheerfully with children in a nursery setting.

  • Completion of Pennsylvania Mandated Reporter Training (must be completed prior to beginning work).

  • Current certification in CPR and first aid.

  • High School diploma required.  Some college preferred.

  • Hiring is contingent upon a criminal background check including PA Child Line, PA criminal and FBI clearances.
