Portraits of Loved Ones Taken by Gun Violence

Exhibition Hours: May 6 - May 29
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 11 AM - 3 PM

Souls Shot Portrait Project links fine artists with families or friends of loved ones taken by gun violence. The artists meet with the victims' loved ones to learn about the lives they lived. Their goal is to present diverse works that in some way relay graphically, or through narrative, the essence of the person being portrayed.

We hope that this project will continue to bring some joy and peace to the families and friends of victims and, by bringing attention to the scourge of gun violence in this way, be a call to action to all who see them.

White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism

  • First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia (map)

Join the Conversation!

First Church’s Anti-bias Conversation group invites all members to join an online conversation (via Zoom) on Sunday, April 18 at 12:45 pm.  We’ll discuss the book White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk about Racism by educator Robin DiAngelo. This New York Times bestseller explores the counterproductive reactions white people have when their assumptions about race are challenged, and how these reactions maintain racial inequality.

If you’d like to learn more and about this important topic, please read the book—borrow it from your library or purchase it from Amazon or one of these Black-owned local bookstores: Harriett’s Bookshop in Fishtown or Uncle Bobbie’s Coffee & Books in Germantown—and plan to join the conversation. CANCELLED: Wednesday Lenten Series: Unpacking Everyday Bias

Unpacking Everyday Bias

Wednesdays March 4 - April 1
Brown Bag Lunch & Conversation @ 12 noon OR Soup & Conversation @ 6:30 pm

Our Conversations Worth Having event in January left many of us wanting more; as we read through the survey feedback, it was clear that the majority of participants wanted to continue the conversation by sharing a meal and talking through what we learned.  In order to facilitate this, Baron Mullis, Barbara Chaapel, Ken Ross and Delores Brisbon have received training from our January presenter, Dr. Eve Higginbotham.

These Wednesday conversations are the first installment in Keeping our Conversation Going.  Bring a brown bag lunch on Wednesdays at noon, or come Wednesday evenings at 6:30 for a soup supper and a chance to continue to engage more deeply with one another.  We’ll unpack Chapter 7 from Everyday Bias (Howard J. Ross) that we read for the January workshop.  Copies of Chapter 7 are available; please email the church office  to request a copy.

Everyone is welcome!  Our hope is that folks can commit to attending the majority of the 5 weekly sessions, but you are certainly welcome to attend as many sessions as you are able.  We are requesting RSVPs for the evening sessions so that we prepare the right quantity of soup—please register below or by calling the church office (215-567-0532).  There is no need to register for the Brown-Bag Lunch session at noon.  On-street parking is available with placard for the evening sessions. We hope to see you there!

Halloween Silent Film

Back by Popular Demand!

After a hiatus of several years, the Twenties & Thirties group is sponsoring a silent film for Halloween!

On Sunday, October 27 at 7pm, Andrew Senn will cast his spell over the organ and improvise a complete musical score for the classic film, The Golem (1915).

In this version of the golem legend, the golem, a clay statue brought to life by Rabbi Loew in 16th century Prague to save the Jews from the ongoing brutal persecution by the city's rulers, is found in the rubble of an old synagogue in the 20th century. Brought to life by an antique dealer, the golem is used as a menial servant. Eventually falling in love with the dealer's wife, it goes on a murderous rampage when its love for her goes unanswered.

On-street parking is available with placard.
